EDMUNDSTON, New Brunswick – Inspired by Tristan Fortin and Olivier Coulombe who scored two goals each, the Blizzard won their 10th straight game by defeating the Pictou County Weeks Crushers 5-3 on Saturday night at the Jean-Daigle Centre.
The Blizzard players managed to keep their energy up, fatigue being a potential fear as this was the third game in as many nights for Simon Olivier’s team.
Mitchell McLeod had the other goal for the Blizzard who now have a record of 34-12-0-1 for 69 points, seven more than the Summerside Western Capitals (30-14-2-0). The Blizzard are two points behind the MHL’s overall leaders, the Yarmouth Mariners (35-9-1-0) who have two games in hand.
With three assists, Alex Arsenault has 71 points, a Blizzard high and fourth in the MHL. Coulombe follows in fifth place with 69 points.
The Weeks Crushers (20-25-0-0) responded with Nick Mahar (twice) and Logan O’Neil.
Rookie goaltender Samuel LeBlanc enjoyed his ninth straight win in front of the Blizzard cage. The Memramcook native faced 32 shots compared to 37 for his counterpart Kenzie MacPhail.
Tristan Fortin (1st), Olivier Coulombe (2nd) and Jean-Phillip Boudreau (3rd) earned the stars of the game.
The regular MHL season is coming to an end. The Blizzard have only five games left to play. Their next game will be on Friday, March 3 (7:30 p.m.) at the Jean-Daigle Centre against the Fredericton Red Wings.
