EDMUNDSTON, New Brunswick – Despite a slow start and an opponent constantly on their heels, the Edmundston Blizzard rallied for their 11th win in 12 games when they defeated the Fredericton Red Wings, 6-3, on Thursday evening at the Jean-Daigle Centre in Edmundston.
The Wings (2-7-0-0) got off to a fast start, taking control of the first 15 minutes of play. Jackson Shaddick (2nd at 1:56) and Yanik Felesakis (1st at 14:47) gave Blizzard fans a cold sweat as Fredericton took a 2-0 lead. With 1:15 to go in the first, Nathan Plamondon (6) scored the goal the Blizzard needed for their comeback.
The second period was all Blizzard, with Carl-Anthony Massé (6th), Darien Thomson (2nd) and Justin Hébert (4th) scoring unanswered goals.
At the start of the third period, at 1:04, Philippe Collette (8th) handed the Wings a crushing blow, giving the Blizzard a 5-2 lead.
The visitors never threw in the towel. Xzander Pierce (2nd) reduced the gap to 5-3 at 6:45. Justin Trottier (4th) sealed the deal with a goal in an empty net.
Defenseman Alexis Jacques’ masterful attacking bursts passed the puck to three teammates, who scored goals of rare beauty. Jacques’ three points earned him the second star of the evening. The first went to Hébert (1g, 1a) and the third to Collette (1g, 1a).
Both teams fired the same number of shots (34). Simon Boucher defended the Blizzard fortress as was Zachary Bridgeo for the Red Wings.
The Blizzard (11-1-0-0) will play next against the Mariners Yarmouth (3-6-0-1) on Saturday, October 19 at the Jean-Daigle Centre (7:30 p.m.).
