EDMUNDSTON, New Brunswick – A three-goal burst in the second period by the Edmundston Blizzard led the way to a 4-3 win over the Fredericton Red Wings, on Friday, November 29 at the Jean-Daigle Centre before 2 697 witnesses.
The Blizzard dug themselves a big hole, trailing 3-1 after 20 minutes. But Emery Olauson’s squad bounced back brilliantly during the second frame and took the lead at 19:16 and never looked back afterwards.
Tristan Gagnon, Alex Arsenault, Alex Lavoie and Chrystopher Collin, who scored the winning goal after a one-timer slapshot, all defeated Wings goalkeeper Jack Grant, author of 30 saves throughout the game.
Blizzard’s goalie Antoine Lyonnais conceded all three goals in the first 20 minutes. Liam Smith, twice on deflected shots, and Zach Alcorn beat him.
Blizzard dominated 34-28 in the shots on goal column.
Blizzard’s general on defense, Tristan Mercure, earned the first star of the game. He collected two assists. Liam Smith got the second star and Alex Lavoie, the third one. Lavoie, whose goal tied the game at 3, scored for the first time since January 14, 2018. In 5 games this season, he has 5 points. His experience and sense of anticipation make him a safe value both on defense and on occasion forward’s rushes.
The Blizzard (15-6-1-1) totals 32 points, 10 fewer than the MHL Eastlink North Division leaders, the Summerside Western Capitals (21-3-0-0). But the Blizzard is now tied with the South Shore Lumberjacks (15-8-1-1) in second place overall with two games in hand.
Edmundston will play its next game on Friday, December 6 (7:30 pm) in Grand Falls against the Rapids.
