Blizzard emerge victorious from marathon game

EDMUNDSTON, New Brunswick – Émile Fournier scored his second goal of the night on a power play at 1:38 of overtime to give the Edmundston Blizzard a 4-3 win over the Pictou County Weeks Crushers on Saturday night at the Jean-Daigle Centre.

It was a long night. The game was interrupted with 6:41 remaining in the second period due to a hand injury to one of the referees. By the time a replacement official was available, the game lasted a total of almost three hours.

Kiefer Avery (9th) opened the scoring for the Weeks Crushers (9-14-3-0) at 10:17 of the first period. Just 12 seconds later, Carl-Anthony Massé evened the score with his 11th goal of the campaign. The Crushers regained the lead with Mathieu McDonald’s 5th goal at 18:43.

The visitors extended their lead to two goals thanks to Lucas Canning (20th) at 3:52 of the second period. But the Blizzard got back on track shortly afterwards. Fournier scored his first goal (15th) at 4:53, followed by Alexis Jacques (5th) at 10:03.

Neither team managed to score in the third period, which ended in a 3-3 tie.

With his 16th goal of the season, Émile Fournier approaches the team record for most goals by a rookie in a single season (18), which belongs to Alex Arseneault (2019-2020).

Massé (1g, 1a) and Will Allen (2a) also contributed to the Blizzard attack. In the Crushers camp, Matthew McDonald collected two points (1g, 1a).

The Blizzard (22-3-1-0) once again dominated in the shots column (48-18). Stars went to Émile Fournier (1st) and Justin Trottier (2nd), of the Blizzard, and goalie Yianni Karkoulas (3rd), of the Weeks Crushers.

The Blizzard are exactly halfway through their 52-game schedule. Their next game is on Thursday, December 5 (7:30 p.m.), when they host the West Kent Steamers (15-6-1-0).
