Blizzard falls short to the Steamers

EDMUNDSTON, New Brunswick – The Edmundston Blizzard suffered their first home loss since November 17, 2024 (regular season and playoffs combined) when they fell 3-2 to the West Kent Steamers on Thursday, September 18.

Austin Sanchez broke a 1-1 tie at 4:00 of the third period, then Zachary Paulhus made it 3-1 for the Steamers at 7:45. The Blizzard narrowed the gap to one goal thanks to a goal by defenseman Alexis Chénard, but the Edmundston team’s efforts were subsequently neutralized by goalie Xavier Farrah, who had a strong game, blocking 32 of 34 shots.

The Blizzard opened the scoring with 35 seconds left in the first period thanks to Darien Thomson’s shorthanded goal (4th). Spencer Caines tied the game at 1-1 28 seconds into the second period.

For one of the rare times in its history, the Blizzard allowed 40 shots in a game at the Jean-Daigle Center. Cédric Massé made several outstanding saves in front of the Blizzard net.

Farrah (1st), Massé (2nd), and Nathan Grenier (3rd, 2 assists for the Steamers) were named the stars of the game.

It was these same Steamers who handed the Blizzard their last home loss on November 17, 2024, in a 4-3 overtime win. Since then, the Blizzard had won their last 24 games in Edmundston and had not lost in regulation time at home in their last 27 games.

The Blizzard (1-1-0-1) will be back on the ice on Friday, September 19 (7 p.m.) for the Lightning Chaleur’s (2-0) home opener at the K.C. Irving Regional Centre in Bathurst.
