EDMUNDSTON, N.B. – It was a tough night at the Jean-Daigle Centre for the Edmundston Blizzard, who lost 7-2 on Saturday night to the Truro Bearcats, the hottest team in the Maritime Junior Hockey League.
The Bearcats (16-7-3-0), who won their ninth consecutive game, stormed the Blizzard’s defense in the first period, taking a 4-0 lead in the 14th minute of the first bout.
Liam Welsh (7th and 8th), Nathan Curson (6th and 7th), Austin Hoyt (3rd), Samuel Vachon (1st), and Jake Todd (9th) found the back of the net behind goalies Rylan Benner and Cédric Massé. Benner was pulled at 14:15 after allowing four goals on eight shots.
Charles-Éric Tremblay (6th) and William Labranche (15th) replied for the Blizzard (12-10-1-2).
Truro dominated in shots (39-36). Goaltender Sam Berthiaume, who turned 16 just two weeks ago, was brilliant in front of the Bearcats’ net. His great work earned him the second star of the game. The first star went to his teammate Welsh, while the third star was awarded to Labranche, who had one goal and one assist.
The Blizzard will have to quickly put this loss behind them as they return to action on Sunday, November 30 (3 p.m.) at the Campbellton Civic Centre, where they will face the Campbellton Tigers (12-9-2-1).
