Blizzard reaches 80 points for the first time, beating Steamers 6-4

EDMUNDSTON, New Brunswick – Records continue to fall in Edmundston.

In beating the West Kent Steamers 6-4 on Friday evening at the Jean-Daigle Centre, the Blizzard broke their single-season points record (80) and equalled their number of wins (39). Edmundston had collected 79 points in 2023-2024 and 39 wins. And they still have six games to play until the end of the season before the playoffs begin.

Émile Fournier (35th and 36th goals), Carl-Anthony Massé (21st and 22nd goals), Philippe Collette (3 assists), Zachary Robichaud (2 assists), Mathieu Pigeon (9th goal) and William Labranche (9th goal) led the Blizzard attack (39-5-1-1).

Lucas Byrne (19th and 1a), Damon Englehutt (22nd), Cam White (6th) and Michael Arsenault (4th) shook the ropes for the Steamers (26-13-4-1).

The Steamers built up a 2-0 lead with just over a minute to go in the first period. Up to that point, their game had been spotless. But Émile Fournier’s first goal of the night with 30 seconds left in the first was the beginning of the Steamers’ collapse, as the Blizzard scored five consecutive goals after that to take a 6-2 lead.

The real coup de grace came in the 6th-7th minute of the second period. In a span of a minute and five seconds, the Blizzard scored three goals in a row. A nice parallel between the blizzard outside the Jean-Daigle Centre and the blizzard inside.

Fournier (1st), Collette (2nd) and Robichaud (3rd) earned the stars of the evening. The Blizzard had the upper hand 39-19 in shots. Frédéric Cousineau got the win in front of the Blizzard cage. Olivier Dallaire was in net for the Steamers.

The Blizzard have just recorded their 12th consecutive win. Their record of 14 dates back to the 2022-2023 season.

The Blizzard play their next game on Sunday afternoon (3 p.m.) when they host the Grand Falls Rapids (12-25-2-6).
