CAMPBELLTON, New Brunswick – Led by a perfect performance by goaltender Francis Asselin, the Edmundston Blizzard blanked the Campbellton Tigers 3-0 on Friday, September 22, in front of 980 spectators at the Memorial Civic Centre in Campbellton.

The Blizzard wins for a second straight game at the start of the Maritime Junior Hockey League season. Edmundston ranks first and is the only undefeated team in the EastLink North division.

Asselin, who did not take part in any exhibition game due to an injury, blocked all 39 shots of the Tigers.

Liam Leonard scored the winning goal at 4:57 of the first period, a shorthanded and unassisted goal. Then at 11:30, captain Kyle Ward scored his third goal of the season with Logan Johnston getting the assist.

The Blizzard held tight until the end of the third period. With 34 seconds left, Nick Jessome scored in an empty net to make it 3-0. Jeff Akerley collected the pass on this last goal.

Edmundston, who fired 34 pucks against the opponent’s goalkeeper, did well defensively closing the door to the Tigers’ attack who couldn’t capitalized on three powerplay opportunities during the first two periods. In the third period, Leonard and Dylan Coffey fought and were both expelled from the game.

The tree stars of the game : Francis Asselin (1st), Liam Leonard (2nd) and Kyle Ward (3rd).

Ryan Salvis’s squad will not have too much time to savor their victory as they head to St. Stephen on Saturday, September 23 to face the Aces (1 win and 3 losses) at 7 pm. St. Stephen defeated the Woodstock Slamers 3-2 in overtime on Friday.
