GRAND FALLS, New Brunswick – The Edmundston Blizzard once again asserted their dominance with an easy 6-1 victory over the Grand Falls Rapids on Sunday afternoon at the E. & P. Sénéchal Center.
Shooting statistics reflected the pace of the game, with the Blizzard consistently maintaining possession of the puck. Edmundston fired 54 shots at goaltender Adam Lecours, while Simon Boucher received 19 shots.
Alexis Jacques was the star of the game. The 19-year-old defenseman had his best career game in the MHL with two goals and two assists. Captain Philippe Collette scored twice, while Jérémy Fortin (1g, 1a) and Justin Trottier were the other scorers. With more luck, Jacques and Collette could have scored hat-tricks. As for Trottier, it was his first MHL goal.
Only Nicholas Brennan managed to beat Simon Boucher, who got his first MHL win.
Not surprisingly, Jacques was awarded the game’s first star. The others went to Collette (2nd) and Carl-Anthony Massé (3rd), who had an assist.
The Blizzard won their first two games of the season so far. On Friday, they defeated the Campbellton Tigers 3-1. In 120 minutes, the Blizzard outshot their opponents 97-44.
Simon Olivier’s squad will have to put their first two wins behind them quickly and focus on their next opponent, the Miramichi Timberwolves, who also won their two opening games comfortably. The Timberwolves-Blizzard clash takes place on Thursday (7:30 p.m.) at the Jean-Daigle Centre. The Timberwolves eliminated the Blizzard in last year’s league semi-finals. Miramichi went on to win the final.
