Blizzard wins home game opener

EDMUNDSTON, New Brunswick – The Edmundston Blizzard struck early with two goals in the first six minutes, and that was just enough to edge the Campbellton Tigers, 3-1, on Friday evening in the home opening game of the Blizzard’s eighth season.

The 2,322 fans gathered at the Jean-Daigle Centre thought their team were cruising to a much easy victory after goals from defenseman Fabrice Bourgeois (2:38) and forward Carl-Anthony Massé (6:29). When Owen Underhill cut the deficit to 2-1 at 9:09 of the opening frame, the Tigers sent a message that they would not be easy prey.

The second period saw neither team score. In the third, captain Philippe Collette made it 3-1 in an empty cage with less than a second left in the game.

Goalie Adam Rouleau was exceptional in front of the Tigers net, saving 40 shots, many from close range. Simon Olivier put his thrust in goalie Jack Howatt to start in goal. The Blizzard dominated 43-25 in shots.

Massé (Blizzard, 1st), Jérémy Fortin (Blizzard, 2nd) and Rouleau (Tigers, 3rd) were named the game’s stars.

The Blizzard travel to Grand Falls on Sunday (3 p.m.) for their second game of the weekend.
