Blizzard’s Chénard wins 2025-26 UGIC Lighthouse Award

Truro, N.S. (April 24, 2026) – The Maritime Junior Hockey League is pleased to announce that defenseman Alexis Chénard of the Edmundston Blizzard has won the 2025-26 United General Insurance Corporation (UGIC) Lighthouse Award. Chénard received his award during a ceremony ahead of Game 3 of the Metalfab MHL Cup Final on Friday night from UGIC CEO Matthew Wight. This award carries a $1,500 bursary from UGIC, the MHL’s Auto Insurer of Choice.

The award is presented to a player who exemplifies excellence in athletics, academics, and community service. Chénard, who has been taking classes at the Université de Moncton towards a Health Sciences diploma, is in his second season with Edmundston. On the ice this season, he had two goals and ten assists in 49 games for the Blizzard, averaging just over 20 minutes of ice time per game. So far in the Metalfab MHL Cup Finals, Chénard has six assists in twelve games.

Off the ice, he was involved in Edmundston’s Blizzlecture program, helping promote literacy among elementary school students across Northwestern New Brunswick. He has also participated in community skating events, where Blizzard President André Lebel says Chénard’s welcoming personality allows him to connect naturally with young athletes and fans. Through his leadership, discipline, and ability to excel in athletics, academics, and community service, he was named the Edmundston Blizzard Student-Player of the Year for the 2025-26 season.

The MHL and UGIC congratulate Chénard on his achievements on and off the ice and wish him well at the Université de Moncton next season.
