Truro, N.S. (June 15, 2024) – The Maritime Junior Hockey League (MHL) is pleased to announce Peter Amanatidis of the Edmundston Blizzard is the 2023-24 winner of the league’s Community Spirit Award.
The 21-year-old from Montreal, Quebec spent three seasons with the Blizzard while completing online courses to complete is pre-University CEGEP. Team President André Lebel says in that time, Amanatidis has been involved in the local community to give back the support received from the fans in Edmundston.
He took part in the community program “Blizzlecture”, established in 2017 when the team moved to Edmundston, which aims to motivate local school kids from Grades 3 to 5 to read. With few other members of the team, Amanatidis participated in promotional videos and school visits to interact with young students and encourage them to read. Lebel says Amanatidis also signed autographs on special hockey cards that gave the kids tips and tricks to improve their reading abilities.
The forward helped to mobilize his teammates throughout the season when community activities were organised. This included volunteering to meet-and-greet fans, take pictures, and participate in community activities.
“It is rare to meet a hockey player who is so mature, organized and results-oriented,” says Lebel. “His leadership and vision have made a positive impact on our hockey team this year and we have no doubt that this will continue for years to come. He is a great model for youth and will surely become a great ambassador for our team and league.”
On the ice, Amanatidis tallied fifteen goals and 20 assists in 51 games in 2023-24, in addition to two goals and one assist in eight games during the Metalfab MHL Cup Playoffs. For his career with the Blizzard, he had 35 goals and 58 assists in 136 regular season games, with seven goals and eight assists in 27 playoff games. The MHL congratulates Amanatidis for his efforts on and off the ice this season.
