EDMUNDSTON, N.-B. – Forward Émile Fournier enjoyed his best offensive output in a game this season when he led the Edmundston Blizzard to a 5-3 victory over the Miramichi Timberwolves on Friday night at the Jean-Daigle Centre.
The 6’4”, 18-year-old player from Sainte-Luce, Québec, was involved in his team’s first three goals. After opening the scoring at 10:38 of the first period, the Timberwolves saw the Blizzard pick up the pace a few minutes later. At 14:24 while shorthanded, Fournier (10th) put the finishing touches to a spectacular two-players breakaway getting a pass from Noah Breau to tie the score. Then, at 17:26 on the power play, he earned an assist on Justin Hébert’s (9th) goal, who deflected a sharp pass from Mathieu Boucher past goalie Mathis Lafontaine. Up 2-1 after 20 minutes, the Blizzard never looked back.
Taking advantage of another man advantage to start the second period, Jérémy Fortin (8th) converted a Fournier pass to give the Blizzard a 3-1 lead. Noah Breau (5th) and Justin Trottier (6th) then scored to give Edmundston a comfortable 5-1 lead.
However, the Miramichi Timberwolves rallied with two goals before the second frame ended. The visitors’ goals came from Ryan Hackett (2nd and 3rd) and Mitchel Wagner (6th).
No team got on the scoresheet in the third period.
The game’s three stars went to Fournier (1st; 1g, 2a), Breau (2nd; 1g, 1a) and Hackett (3rd; 2g).
The Blizzard dominated 42-24 in the shots column. Clay Ryan won his second game in two starts in front of the Blizzard cage. Timberwolves (6-9-0-2) starting goalie Mathis Lafontaine left the game after conceding five goals on 27 shots. Teammate Jack Flanagan was perfect on 15 Blizzard attempts.
The Blizzard (18-2-0-0) will be idle until next Friday when they host the Grand Falls Rapids at the Jean-Daigle Centre (7:30 p.m.).
