Evan White commits to Ontario Tech University

Edmundston Blizzard’s Evan White has committed to the Ontario Tech University Ridgebacks for the 2020-21 season.

The 20-year-old from St. John’s, Newfoundland was recently named the Maritime Junior Hockey League’s (MHL) Defenceman of the Year. White was the 3rd overall selection in the 2016 MHL Entry Draft by the St. Stephen Aces. In 2016-17, he finished fifth in team scoring with eight goals and 21 assists in 49 games in helping the Aces to their first playoff appearance.  White added three assists in four playoff games in a first-round loss to Miramichi.

In his sophomore season, White continued to produce for the Aces while improving defensively. He led the Aces in scoring with four goals and 26 assists in 49 games. In 2018-19, White tallied seven goals and 33 assists as St. Stephen returned to the playoffs. He added an assist in another first-round playoff exit, this time to Summerside.

After the move of the franchise to Fredericton for 2019-20, White was named team captain and had two goals and 20 assists in 19 games before being traded to the Edmundston Blizzard on January 7th, 2020. Once with the Blizzard, the defensive stalwart had two goals and 30 assists in 33 games.

“We are very excited to add Evan to our Ridgebacks’ family,” said Ontario Tech head coach Curtis Hodgins. “He is a terrific puck mover who can skate and play in all situations for us and we expect him to be a key contributor on our power play with his vision and ability to get pucks on net. We are losing a couple veteran defencemen through graduation and we believe Evan can come in right away and eat up a lot of those minutes. Evan is a great addition to our program.”

The MHL congratulates White on his Junior A career and commitment to Ontario Tech University.
