EDMUNDSTON, N.-B. – Propelled by an excellent team effort, the Edmundston Blizzard players won their eighth straight game by defeating the Fredericton Red Wings, 6-2, on Friday night at the Jean-Daigle Centre.
The victory was particularly special for goaltender Clay Ryan, who was playing his first game in a Blizzard uniform. The 19-year-old goaltender from St. John’s, Newfoundland, did well to earn his first Maritime Junior Hockey League win after turning aside 22 shots.
The Blizzard built up a comfortable 3-0 lead after 20 minutes of play. They kept control of the game, maintaining their three-goal lead (4-1) at the end of the second frame.
Aldouane’s Noah Breau earned first star honours with a spectacular third period goal (4th) and an assist. His linemate Will Carroll also picked up two points (2nd, 1a). Edmundston’s other goals came from Carl-Anthony Massé (8th), Jérémy Fortin (7th – winning goal), Philippe Collette (10th) and Justin Hébert (8th). Defensemen Paul Slivca and Mathieu Boucher and forward Will Allen picked up two assists each.
Aidan Brewer (1st) and Owen MacPherson (3rd) replied for the Red Wings (5-10-0-0).
The Blizzard dominated 42-24 in shots. Mathieu Mongrain was Fredericton’s goalkeeper.
The next game for the Blizzard (17-1-0-0) will be an important test, as they host their arch-rivals, the Summerside Western Capitals (12-2-2-0), on Saturday, November 2 (7:30 p.m.). The Blizzard are ranked 2nd in the country, while the Western Capitals are 5th.
