Marco Martin, MHL first overall draft pick, selected by the Blizzard

EDMUNDSTON, New Brunswick – The Edmundston Blizzard has selected Marco Martin of Moncton as the first overall pick of the 2022 Maritime Junior A Hockey League Draft held virtually Friday evening.

The Blizzard had the very first overall pick for the first time in its young history.

Martin, 5’11’ 175 lbs, is an 18-year-old forward who had a great 2021-22 season with the Moncton Flyers of the NBPEIMU18HL. His rights are also owned by the Rimouski Oceanic of the QMJHL.

In 30 games during the season, he amassed 7 goals and 18 assists. He added 2 goals and 3 assists in 7 league playoff games the Flyers won. He contributed to the conquest of the Telus Cup Canadian championship by the Flyers in Alberta this past May. In 7 games, he totaled 2 goals and 4 assists.

“Marco is exactly what the Blizzard organization is looking for. Big strong kid who hits like a truck, and also contributes offensively. Amazing kid on and off the ice and top end character person,” said Blizzard general manager Steve MacPherson, who knows him well from being one of Flyers’ assistant coaches last season.

Marco Martin was a big star with the École L’Odysée Olympiens, the Moncton team that plays in the Eastern Conference of the New Brunswick High School Hockey League. He finished first on his team in 2020-21 for the number of points (12b, 12p = 24pts in just 13 games). The previous year, he collected 7 goals and 14 assists in 24 games with the Odyssey.
