TRURO, Nova Scotia – The Edmundston Blizzard is back from Nova Scotia and can say “Mission Accomplished”!
Simon Olivier’s troupe won all three of its weekend games in as many days for the second consecutive season in the neighboring province. On Sunday, the Blizzard defeated the Truro Bearcats, 4-2, winning an eighth straight game to start the season, breaking the team record of seven wins set in 2017-2018.
This is a mark since the Blizzard began playing in Edmundston. It is impossible to verify whether more victories have been set before, back in the days of the Dieppe Commandos and predecessor teams in Moncton whose origins date back to 1959.
After a scoreless first period, the Bearcats (0-7-0-0) got on the scoreboard through Luke McPhee (3rd) at 4:18 of the second. It was the first time since the start of the season that the opposing team had scored the game’s first goal.
It didn’t take long for the Blizzard to bounce back. At 10:41, Émile Fournier scored his 5th goal of the campaign. Nine seconds later, Nathan Plamondon made it 2-1 Blizzard with his 4th goal of the season. At 14:45, Justin Trottier (3rd) gave the Blizzard a 3-1 lead that proved to be the winning goal. However, the Bearcats reduced the gap to one goal at 15:45 thanks to Zachary Marquis (2nd).
Edmundston took a 4-2 lead at 7:46 of the third period. Right from the face-off won by Jérémy Fortin, Ryan Loveless (3rd) put the puck behind goalkeeper Alexis Cournoyer, who was screened by his own defensemen.
Like his colleague Jack Howatt, goaltender Simon Boucher earned his fourth victory in front of the Blizzard cage, which dominated 39-16 in the shots column on Sunday.
After five consecutive games on opposing rinks, the Blizzard will be happy to reconnect with their fans at the Jean-Daigle Centre when they host the Valley Wildcats (4-4-0-0) on Thursday, October 10 (7:30 p.m.).
