EDMUNDSTON, New Brunswick – On his 17th birthday, Edmundston goaltender Olivier St-Onge gave himself quite a gift: his first career game in the Maritime Junior A Hockey League, and a shutout!
The young goaltender turned aside all 15 Valley Wildcats shots as the Edmundston Blizzard blanked the Nova Scotia team 4-0. What’s more, St-Onge should be credited with an assist on the game’s second goal.
Although he only faced a few shots, the Edmundston goalkeeper had to outdo himself on a few occasions and showed a lot of confidence in front of the net.
Carl-Anthony Massé (5th) and Philippe Collette (7th) led the Blizzard attack with a goal and an assist each. Nathan Plamondon (5th) and Justin Hébert (2nd) also beat Xavier Farrah, who faced 43 shots.
Massé (1st), Plamondon (2nd) and St-Onge (3rd) were named stars of the game.
Only one other goaltender in the Blizzard’s history since 2017-2018 recorded a shutout in his first game in the Edmundston uniform. That was Francis Asselin, who achieved the feat on September 22, 2017 against Campbellton (3-0 win).
The Blizzard thus improved its record for most victories to start a season with a ninth consecutive win. Next up for the Blizzard are the Campbellton Tigers on Friday (7 p.m.) and the Miramichi Timberwolves on Sunday (2:30 p.m.). Both games will be played on opposing rinks.
