Steamers win thrilling game in overtime

EDMUNDSTON, N.-B. – In his first game of the season, forward Cam White chose the perfect moment to score his first goal, netting the winner in the very last minute of overtime to give the West Kent Steamers a 4-3 win over the Edmundston Blizzard in a playoff-style matchup in front of an enthusiastic crowd of 2,455 at the Jean-Daigle Centre.

The Steamers (12-6-1-0) struck first at 12:59 of the opening frame thanks to Mathis Tarani (4th). The Blizzard evened the score at 5:32 of the second period on a goal by Jérémy Fortin (9th). West Kent took control of the game, however, with goals from Damon Englehutt (11th, 8:58) and Xavier Roy (5th, 16:03).

Trailing 3-1, the Blizzard got going early in the third with goals from Mathieu Pigeon (2nd, at 2:42) and Colby Morin (2nd, at 4:29).

The Blizzard (19-2-1-0) once again dominated in shots (36-26). Steamers goalie Olivier Dallaire earned third star honors. Simon Boucher was in front of the Blizzard cage.

Tarani and Pigeon rounded out the scoring with a goal and an assist each. Justin Hébert added two assists for the Blizzard. The first star went to Cam White and the second to Pigeon.

The Blizzard thus completes a five-game homestand. They will face the Rapids in Grand Falls (4-9-0-4) on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.

It was the plus toys game at the Jean-Daigle Centre. Hundreds of stuffed animals were thrown onto the ice midway through the first period. The toys will be donated to children in the Northwest region. The event was organized in collaboration with the Edmundston Police Force as part of the Sharing Tree Campaign.
