Timberwolves tie the series with overtime win

MIRAMICHI, New Brunswick – Justin David scored his second goal of the game 34 seconds into the second overtime period, giving the Miramichi Timberwolves a 7-6 victory over the Edmundston Blizzard.

The Metalfab MHL Cup best-of-seven Eastlink North Division semi-final series is now tied 1-1.

Trailing 5-1 after 40 minutes of play, the Blizzard got going in the third period, scoring five straight goals to take a 6-5 lead. Completely stunned, the Timberwolves managed to tie the game with only 2:49 left on the clock.

Raphaël Denis and Émile Fournier scored two goals each for the Blizzard. Zachary Lessard and Darien Thomson also shook the ropes. Jake MacDonald (3 assists), Mathieu Boucher (2 assists) and Noah Breau (2 assists) also contributed to the Blizzard offense.

For the winners, Justin David had two goals and two assists. Drew MacIntyre (2g, 1a), Easton Schlender (1g, 1a), Ryan Hackett and Cael MacDonald scored the Timberwolves’ goals. Jacob Lafontaine picked up three assists in the win.

The Timberwolves unleashed 41 shots on the Blizzard goaltenders. Austin Caley was removed from the game after conceding five goals to the Wolves. Frédéric Cousineau was then sent into the action.

The Blizzard fired 40 shots at Jack Flanagan.

David (1st), MacIntyre (2nd) and Fournier (3rd) were named the stars of the game.

The 626 spectators saw all kinds of situations, including numerous turnovers, bizarre rebounds and deflected shots.

The series continues on Thursday (7:30 p.m.) at the Jean-Daigle Centre.
