Cole Stewart commits to Nipissing University

EDMUNDSTON, New Brunswick – The Nipissing University Lakers have acquired forward Cole Stewart who, instead of playing his final junior season in 2021-2022 with the Edmundston Blizzard, will make the jump directly to the Ontario University Athletics circuit (OUA) next September.

The 19-year-old played 7 games with the Blizzard, from March 10 to March 21. He had 2 goals and 4 assists.

Moncton native Stewart, 5’11 “, was the Blizzard’s second pick in the 2018 MHL Draft in Berwick, NS. He has played in the QMJHL since the 2017-2018 season until 2020-2021. In 93 games with Halifax, Acadie-Bathurst and Chicoutimi, he accumulated 5 goals and 10 assists. He started his junior career in 2017 with the Miramichi Timberwolves where he had 3 goals and 5 assists in 17 games.

Stewart will join former Blizzard star goaltender Francis Asselin, who has lined up with the Lakers since the 2019-20 season. Nipissing University is located in North Bay, an Ontario city of about 50,000 inhabitants, 13 percent of whom speak French as their mother-tongue (6,645 people) according to the latest Statistics Canada census.

Due to the pandemic, OAU teams have not been able to play a single game in 2020-2021.
