Opportunists, Western Capitals win

EDMUNDSTON, New Brunswick – The Summerside Western Capitals capitalized on the power play late in the game to defeat the Edmundston Blizzard 5-3 in front of a crowd of 2,628 spectators gathered at the Jean-Daigle Centre Saturday afternoon.

The Blizzard was able to tie the game at 11:11 in the third period on a brilliant play by Alex Lavoie, who was returning to the competition. He made a short pass to Brock McLeod, who fired a shot passed Dominik Tmej from the slot. With the score 3-3, the two teams seemed to be heading for extra time, but Zach Biggar’s slap shot from the point during a man advantage beat Antoine Lyonnais in the upper corner of the net. The puck deflected on a stick before making its way into the net.

Western Capitals captain Brodie MacArthur got the final goal in an empty net. The two teams will face each other again on Sunday at 3 pm in Edmundston.

Chrystoper Collin scored twice for the Blizzard, Gianluca Fuoco, Kallum Muirhead and Colby MacArthur also shook the strings for the Western Capitals, 16 wins and 3 losses. Blizzard’s record slipped to 13 wins and 6 losses.

First star of the game, Dominik Tmej stole the show. He faced 34 shots. He was particular stellar in the first period when he faced a barrage of 16 shots while his teammates only got 3. The Western Capitals ended the game with 25 shots. Biggar (2nd) and Collin (3rd) earned the other two stars of the game.

Besides Alex Lavoie, Ethan McLaughlin dressed up for his first game in a Blizzard uniform. Big forward Félix Laniel had to leave the game in the first period, suffering a shoulder injury.
