EDMUNDSTON, New Brunswick – The Edmundston Blizzard took a 3-0 lead until the end of the second period and held on to a 3-2 victory over the Summerside Western Capitals Sunday night at the Jean-Daigle Centre in front of 2,803 pumped up spectators. The final series of the EastLink North division of the Maritime Junior A Hockey League is now tied 1-1.

The Logan Johnston – Kyle Ward – Alexandre Jacob line was separated during the game to be reunited… on the score sheet. The three teammates scored the Blizzard’s three goals.

After a first period completely dominated by the Blizzard, Johnston buried the puck into the net at 18:09 after a pass from newcomer Marc Gallie. Eleven seconds later, Ward shook the strings to make it 2-0. Jeff Akerley and Maxime Grandmaison got the assists on the goal.

At 15:57 of the second, Jacob increased the lead to 3-0 for the Blizzard after a play prepared by Pierre Bourgoin and Alex Lavoie. This goal proved to be the winner.

The Western Capitals reduced the gap to two goals with Cam Roberts’ goal at 19:03.

If the first two periods were all Blizzard, it was otherwise in the third when the locals tightened their defense allowing the Western Capitals to attack more. The visitors led 15-8 in shots during the last 20 minutes. Brodie MacMillan, with a wrist shot in the top right corner, beat goalkeeper Francis Asselin at 7:37 assisted by TJ Shea and Brodie MacArthur.

The two goalies offered a remarkable show. Dominik Tmej repelled 41 of 44 Blizzard shots. His counterpart, Francis Asselin, was brilliant by stopping 33 pucks. Blizzard #31 was making a comeback after an injury suffered in the last game of the regular season on March 11.

Jacob (1st), Tmej (2nd) and Asselin (3rd) earned the game’s three stars. The best of seven series now shifts to Summerside for games 3 and 4 which will be played Tuesday and Wednesday night, both at 7 pm.
